When to use this
- You want to crochet a baby blanket, throw or bedspread and need to know how many chains to start with.
- You use a stitch pattern that works in repeats and need the chain to be a multiple of the repeat.
- You want to carry the blanket size straight on to a yarn estimate.
How to use
- Choose inches or centimetres, then pick a standard size or type your own width and length.
- Crochet a swatch, count the stitches and rows over 4 in (10 cm) in the middle, and enter both numbers.
- Enter the stitch pattern repeat and the extra chains your pattern asks for. Use 1 and 2 if unsure.
- Press the button and read the chain, the number of rows and the finished size.
- Open the Yarn Amount Calculator from the link to see how many skeins to buy.
Examples
- 50 x 60 in throw, 16 stitches and 8 rows over 4 in, repeat 1, 2 extra chains: 16 stitches over 4 in is 4 per inch, so 50 in needs 200 stitches and a chain of 202. 8 rows over 4 in is 2 per inch, so 60 in needs 120 rows.
- 35 in wide, pattern repeat of 6, same gauge: 35 in x 4 = 140 stitches. 140 / 6 = 23.3 repeats, rounded to 23, gives 138 stitches and a finished width of 34.5 in.
Understanding the result
Stitches per inch come from your swatch (stitches counted divided by 4 in, or by 10 cm). The width times stitches per inch is the number of stitches across, rounded to the nearest multiple of your pattern repeat, and the extra chains are added for the foundation chain. The length times rows per inch gives the row count, rounded to a whole row. The finished size is then worked back from the rounded counts so you can see how far it moved from your target.
Limitations
- Gauge changes with the hook, yarn, tension and how the swatch is washed. A big blanket can drift from a small swatch, so check your gauge again after some rows.
- Only flat rectangles are modelled. Rounded, shaped or granny-square blankets need a pattern.
- Borders are not worked out. Enter the border width so the body is made smaller, then add the border yourself.
- Stitch and row counts are rounded to whole numbers, so the finished size can differ from the target by a fraction of an inch.
FAQ
What size is a standard crochet blanket?
Common sizes are about 30 x 40 in for a baby blanket, 50 x 60 in for a throw, 66 x 90 in for a twin bed and 90 x 100 in for a queen bed. They differ between sources, so check against your bed or sofa.
How do I work out the number of chains for a blanket?
Multiply the width you want by the number of stitches per inch from your swatch, round to the nearest multiple of your stitch pattern repeat, and add the extra chains your pattern asks for. This tool does the sum.
How many rows do I need?
Multiply the length by the rows per inch from your swatch. For 8 rows over 4 inches that is 2 rows per inch, so 60 in needs 120 rows.
Why does the finished width differ from my target?
The stitch count has to be a whole number and a multiple of the pattern repeat. The tool works the width back from the rounded count and shows it.
How much yarn will the blanket take?
The link below the result opens the Yarn Amount Calculator with your size, crochet and the yarn weight already filled in. Its estimate is rough, so trust a yardage given by your pattern if it has one.
