Flooring Calculator: How Many Boxes Do You Need?
Add up to three rectangles for an L-shaped room, pick a straight, diagonal or herringbone layout for the waste, and get the number of flooring boxes to buy. Feet or metres. Runs in your browser.
When to use this
- You are buying laminate, vinyl plank or engineered wood sold by the box and need the number of boxes.
- Your room is L-shaped or has an alcove, so one length times one width is not enough.
- You want the waste to follow the layout (straight, diagonal or herringbone), not one fixed number.
How to use
- Choose feet or metres. Split the floor into rectangles and enter up to three of them.
- Enter any area that will not be covered, such as a fixed island.
- Pick the layout. This fills in a waste percentage you can change.
- Type the area one box covers from the box label.
- Press Calculate boxes. Check the drawing, then copy the buy list.

Examples
- 15 x 12 ft room with a 5 x 4 ft alcove, straight layout: The floor is 180 + 20 = 200 sq ft. With 10 percent waste you need 220 sq ft, which is exactly 11 boxes at 20 sq ft per box.
- Same room laid on the diagonal: 15 percent waste gives 230 sq ft, which is 11.5 boxes, so 12 boxes. Diagonal layouts cost you about one more box here.
Understanding the result
The tool adds the area of each rectangle, subtracts any area not covered, adds the waste percentage and divides by the area one box covers. The answer is rounded up to whole boxes. The leftover figure shows how much floor the boxes cover beyond what you need.
Limitations
- This estimates materials only. It is not a check of the subfloor, moisture, expansion gaps, stairs or local rules.
- The layout waste presets are marked UNSOURCED. Follow the flooring maker's advice when it gives a different figure.
- Rectangles only: curved walls, angled walls and stair treads are not modelled. Add a rectangle that covers them and rely on the waste figure.
- Boxes from different batches can differ in shade, so buy everything at once and keep a spare box.
FAQ
How many boxes of flooring do I need?
Divide the floor area plus waste by the area one box covers, then round up. This tool does that for up to three rectangles and shows the steps.
How much waste should I add for flooring?
A common rule of thumb is about 10 percent for a straight layout and about 15 percent for diagonal. Patterns such as herringbone often need more. The presets here are UNSOURCED, so check the flooring maker's advice.
How do I measure an L-shaped room?
Split it into two rectangles, measure each one and enter them as area 1 and area 2. Add a third rectangle for an alcove or a hallway.
Do I subtract kitchen cabinets and islands?
Fixed items that sit on the floor and will not be covered can be entered as the area not covered. Many people leave cabinets in the area and rely on the waste, so choose what suits your layout.
Why is the tool telling me to round up?
Flooring is sold by the full box, so a partial box cannot be bought. The leftover shown is the floor area the extra material covers beyond what you need.
Does this tool store my measurements?
No. It runs in your browser. The share link keeps your numbers after the # sign, which is never sent to a server.
