When to use this
- Two packs are in different sizes or different units, such as 16 oz and 2 lb, and you want to know which costs less.
- You are comparing multipacks, for example 3 packs of 250 g against one 1 kg bag.
- A coupon changes the price and you want to see if it changes the winner.
How to use
- Choose the unit to compare, such as 1 oz, 100 g or 1 L.
- For each product enter the price, the size of one pack and its unit. Change the number of packs for multipacks.
- Add money off if you have a coupon. It is taken off the price first.
- Press Compare unit prices to see the items ranked, cheapest first, with the percentage difference.
Examples
- 16 oz for 4.00 against 2 lb for 7.00: The first costs 4.00 / 16 = 0.25 per ounce. The second is 32 oz, so 7.00 / 32 = 0.21875 per ounce. The larger pack is 12.5 percent cheaper per ounce.
Understanding the result
Each size is converted into a base unit (grams, millilitres or a count), multiplied by the number of packs, and the price after any money off is divided by it. The result is shown per the unit you chose. Items are ranked cheapest first and compared with the cheapest one.
Limitations
- The cheapest unit price is not always the best buy: quality, shelf life and how much you will use matter.
- No prices are looked up. Everything comes from what you type.
- UK pints and other imperial volumes are not included.
- Up to six products.
FAQ
How do I calculate unit price?
Divide the price by the amount in the pack, for example 4.00 / 16 oz = 0.25 per ounce. Do the same for each product and compare.
How do I compare ounces and pounds?
Convert both to the same unit first. 1 lb is 16 oz. This tool converts for you and shows each price per the unit you pick.
Is the bigger pack always cheaper?
No. Some larger packs cost more per ounce than smaller ones. That is why it pays to compare the unit price.
How do I compare a multipack?
Enter the size of one pack and set the number of packs. A 6-pack of 12 oz cans is 12 oz with 6 packs.
Why is an item not ranked?
It uses a different kind of unit from the one you compare by, for example litres when you compare per ounce. Choose a matching unit or change that row.
