Baking Pan Size Converter: How Much Batter for a Different Pan

Compare two baking pans by floor area to see how much to multiply a recipe, how deep the batter will be and an approximate baking time window. Works with 9x13, 8x8, round and loaf pans.

Units
Pan the recipe calls for

Measure the inside of the pan across the bottom. Ignored for square and round pans.

Recipe

If you already scaled the recipe, for example with the Recipe Scaler, enter the factor you used, such as 1.5 or 1/2.

About how deep the batter or filling sits before baking. Used for the spill check and the time window.

When to use this

  • A recipe is written for a 9x13 pan but you only have a 9 in round pan, or the other way round.
  • You already scaled a recipe, for example with the Recipe Scaler, and want to know if the batter will fit your pan.
  • You want a rough idea of how much the baking time moves when the batter is deeper or shallower.

How to use

  1. Choose inches or centimetres and enter the inside size of the pan the recipe calls for.
  2. Enter the pan you want to use and the height of its wall.
  3. Leave the recipe amount at 1, or enter the factor you already used to scale the recipe. Fractions such as 1/2 are fine.
  4. Add the recipe baking time if you want an approximate time window, then press Compare pans.
  5. Multiply every ingredient by the number shown, or copy the result.

Examples

Understanding the result

The tool finds the floor area of each pan (length times width, or pi times the radius squared for a round pan). The new pan area divided by the recipe pan area is the factor that keeps the batter at the same depth. If you enter a different amount of recipe, the batter depth changes in proportion, and the tool compares that depth with the pan wall to warn about spilling. The time window is a rough rule of thumb, shown as 10 percent either side of an estimate.

Limitations

FAQ

How do I change a recipe from a 9x13 pan to a round pan?

Divide the area of the round pan by the area of the 9x13 pan. A 9 in round pan is about 63.6 square inches and a 9x13 is 117, so use about 0.54 times the recipe. This tool does the sum for any two pans.

Is an 8x8 pan the same as a 9 in round pan?

Nearly. An 8x8 pan is 64 square inches and a 9 in round pan is about 63.6, so a recipe for one can be used for the other as written.

Will the baking time change in a different pan?

Usually, yes. Deeper batter takes longer and shallower batter is quicker. The time window here is an approximate rule of thumb, so start checking at the early end and follow your recipe's cues.

How full should I fill a pan?

Many bakers keep batter below about two-thirds of the pan wall so it has room to rise. The tool uses that figure for its spill warning. It is UNSOURCED, so adjust for your recipe.

How do I use this with the Recipe Scaler?

Scale the recipe first in the Recipe Scaler. Then enter the factor you used in the amount box here and compare it with the pan you plan to use.
