When to use this
- You are cooking a holiday dinner and several dishes want the oven at different temperatures.
- You know when you want to sit down and need to know when each dish goes in and comes out.
- You have a frozen turkey and want to know what day to start thawing it.
How to use
- Choose Fahrenheit and pounds or Celsius and kilograms, and a 12-hour or 24-hour clock.
- Enter your serving time and how many ovens you can use.
- For each dish enter the oven temperature, cooking minutes, prep minutes and rest minutes. Untick Uses the oven for stovetop dishes. The pre-filled values are typical examples, so replace them with your recipe's numbers.
- Optional: pick a thawing method and the turkey weight, and say which row is the turkey.
- Press Build schedule. Read the clashes first, then the timeline and the step-by-step list. Copy, download or print it.
Examples
- Turkey and sides, one oven, served at 5:30 pm: A turkey that takes 210 minutes with a 30-minute rest goes in at 1:30 pm and comes out at 5:00 pm. A casserole at 350 F that needs 40 minutes overlaps the turkey for 15 minutes, and the tool suggests ways to fix that.
- Serving just after midnight: Serve at 12:30 am with a 60-minute dish and a 10-minute rest, and the dish goes in at 11:20 pm the day before.
Understanding the result
Working backwards from the serving time, each dish comes out after its cook time minus its rest, goes in one cook time earlier, and prep starts before that. Two oven dishes clash when they need the oven at the same time and their temperatures are more than 15 F (about 8 C) apart. For each clash the tool offers a way out where one applies: let a dish bake while another rests, bake one dish first and hold it, use a second oven or cook one dish another way. Thaw times come from published guidance and are not exact.
Assumptions this tool makes
Items marked UNSOURCED are rules of thumb we have not checked against a published source: treat them as starting points and check the product label, manual or local rule.
- Refrigerator thawing: about 24 hours for each 4 to 5 pounds of turkey (about 1.8 to 2.3 kg). The plan uses the slower end, 24 hours per 4 pounds. Source: USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service, The Big Thaw, paraphrased. This is guidance, not a guarantee, so check the current page.
- Cold-water thawing: about 30 minutes per pound (about 66 minutes per kg), in a leak-proof bag with the water changed every 30 minutes, then cook straight away. Source: USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service, The Big Thaw, paraphrased. This is guidance, not a guarantee.
- Temperature conversion is exact: C = (F - 32) x 5 / 9. Celsius figures are shown rounded to the nearest 5 C, as on an oven dial, but the exact value is used in the calculation. 1 pound is exactly 0.45359237 kg.
- Two oven temperatures within 15 F (about 8 C) are treated as compatible. UNSOURCED - a practical choice.
- Rest time ends at the serving time. Shelf space, oven size, preheat time and how a full oven changes cooking times are not modelled.
- The example dishes and times are typical values only. Take your times from your own recipe.
Limitations
- This is a scheduling aid, not a food-safety instruction. Use a food thermometer and follow your recipe and local food-safety guidance for doneness, holding and reheating.
- Cooking times depend on your oven, pan and the size of the food. The tool uses the minutes you enter and does not estimate them.
- It checks time and temperature overlap only. It does not check that everything fits on the oven shelves.
- Up to 8 dishes. With two ovens a simple rule places dishes in oven 1 first, which is not always the best packing.
- Thaw times are published guidance. A larger or colder turkey may take longer.
FAQ
How do I work out when the turkey goes in?
Start from the time you want to eat. Subtract the resting time to get the take-out time, then subtract the cooking time to get the put-in time. This tool does it for every dish at once and shows the clock times.
What if two dishes need different oven temperatures?
Either bake them at different times, for example a side dish while the turkey rests, bake one earlier and keep it covered until serving, use a second oven, or cook one on the stovetop or in another appliance. The tool lists the options that fit your numbers for each clash.
How long does a turkey take to thaw?
USDA guidance is about 24 hours in the refrigerator for each 4 to 5 pounds, or about 30 minutes per pound in cold water with the water changed every 30 minutes. The tool turns that into a start day and time. It is guidance, so allow a cushion.
Is this a food-safety guide?
No. It only arranges times. Use a food thermometer and follow your recipe and your local food-safety guidance for temperatures, holding and reheating.
Why is my Celsius temperature rounded?
Oven dials move in steps of about 5 degrees, so the display is rounded to the nearest 5 C. The calculation keeps the exact converted value.
Is my menu saved anywhere?
No. Everything is calculated in your browser. The Copy link button puts your entries after the # sign of the address, which is not sent to any server.
